Boolarra Playgroup – What a year!
This year is shaping up to be an exciting one for Boolarra Playgroup. With brand new facilities, a new committee and an abundance of new members including newborns, the future only looks bright for this small and relaxed community group.
In 2013 the Boolarra Multi-purpose building had a very attractive makeover that was a result of the need for a better community facility following the 2009 Bushfires that devastated the small, close-knit town. The recently renovated building offers a great space with a complete new kitchen, toilet/bathroom facilities and playground. It is warm in winter and cool in summer, it has plenty of parking and ultra-modern conveniences!
Earlier in the year Boolarra Playgroup was fortunate enough to receive a generous donation of $500 from the Mirboo North Times. This much needed money enabled Boolarra playgroup to purchase couches that provide more comfort for breastfeeding mothers and other users of the building. The total cost of the couches was $800, in addition to the already generous donation from the Times, the Boolarra Wool Group offered to chip in half of the remaining amount as they use the building and could see what a benefit they would be to them also. The committee and members are very grateful and would like to say ‘Thankyou’ for the generosity shown by these wonderful community groups. Recent developments have also seen Boolarra Playgroup awarded $7000 from the Mirboo North and District Community Foundation to construct a much needed shade structure over the playground. The criteria for the grant included ‘health, wellbeing and youth.’ Boolarra playgroup is honored to receive this amazing contribution which not only benefits the playgroup but also the wider community. The ‘Playground redevelopment project’ will also involve a sandpit that will be constructed by the playgroup members and funded by the money raised by them during the year. A firewood raffle that was organised by Simone and Steve of Budgeree raised in excess of $300 for the Playgroup. Their generous donation of a trailer load of red gum was a very hot item up for raffle. The lucky raffle winner was Emma Carter of Boolarra.
Boolarra Playgroup took on the daunting, yet profitable task of running a Bunnings BBQ on the first weekend of spring. There was a great amount of time volunteered by all the members who worked tirelessly to net $800 clear profit for the day! Well done to everyone involved.
The playgroup currently has families attending from Boolarra, Darlimurla, Mirboo North, Yinnar South and Budgeree. The playgroup offers activities for newborns to pre-school aged children. They encourage a peaceful, low-key environment where the children and adults have an opportunity to engage with each other, make new friendships, share ideas, learn new skills and get respite from the isolation that a lot of parents and carers can face when raising young children. The playgroup is looking for new members and invites anyone who is interested in joining to feel welcome to drop in on a Thursday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Boolarra playgroup is appealing to any groups or individuals within the community to volunteer time to erect a sandpit and clean up the garden area. Also they would be very grateful of any donations of good quality sandpit toys, books or other items that may benefit the group.
