‘Thank You’ Party to celebrate community!

Mirboo North Community Thank You Party!

The storm event on February 13th brought a life changing natural disaster right into our community.  Almost five months later it feels like a good time to take stock:  to thank everyone who has helped, to recognise those managing on-going recovery and to celebrate our response as a whole community.  The idea of the ‘Thank You’ Party on Saturday 6th July aims to bring all of that to life.

“We wanted to recognise all the support we have had and to say thank you,” explained Katrina Foster from the Storm Cell Volunteers.  “What better way to do that, then have a Mirboo North Community Thank You Party with everyone: we’ll have hot food, music and lots of fun.”

A Community in Recovery

This is not the end of our recovery though; in some ways this is only the end of the beginning phase.

“Recovery is a bit of a marathon,” says Ruth Rogan from the Community Foundation.  “Many individuals and organisations are continuing to work through healing and recovery – it is a long-term thing.  We also have some community assets and reserves still in the process of being repaired for re-opening.”

Join Us for a Night of Celebration

But right now, as the Storm Cell Volunteers wind up, it feels timely to celebrate our response as a community: to thank our many volunteers, our committed first responders, the generous donors of goods, services and money.  And to catch up with everyone who was impacted – from those who had serious home damage, to those who were terrified by the storm, to those who miss the trees, plants and habitat.

“The past few months have been really challenging, not only physically but emotionally, mentally and aesthetically as well,” added Deanie Brullo from the Storm Cell Volunteers.  “We felt it was only fitting to gather together to celebrate the resilience, strength and community spirit that has been a beacon and grace for the local community.”

The Storm Cell Volunteers group together with the Community Foundation are hosting the Thank You party on Saturday 6th July from 5pm at the MN Shire Hall.

“We will have a range of hot food from local businesses, including a spit roast with spuds from Craig Young, and paella, arancini and hot chips from Doug and Vincenza at Escargot,” explains Kaz Pedretti from the Storm Cell Volunteers.  “But please bring your own drinks!”

There will also be face painting for the kids from 5pm – 7pm, a celebratory cake (donated) and from 7pm the music of Irish band ‘Mollimor’ will carry the party into the night.
