When a major emergency occurs, emergency services, power companies and relief agencies often experience extremely high demand. While help will arrive as soon as possible, it may take time for support to reach every community — especially in widespread events such as storms, fires or floods.
That’s why it is important to be prepared to look after yourself, your family, and your pets in that early period and that is where ‘The First 72 Hours’ initiative comes in. It is a framework designed to help us all forward plan.
South Gippsland Shire Council is holding a ‘First 72 Hours’ workshop in Mirboo North on Thursday 8th October at 6pm in the Baromi Centre. The workshop will provide practical information to help individuals and households develop their own emergency plans for the first 72 hours.

Participants will learn how to prepare emergency kits, protect important information, identify local support networks and stay informed during emergencies. The session is suitable for all and is designed to help build confidence and resilience before the next emergency occurs.
Being prepared for the first 72 hours after an emergency is one of the most effective steps individuals and families can take to improve their safety and reduce the impacts of disruptions to power, communications and essential services. Come along and strengthen your emergency preparedness.
When? Thursday 8th October, 6pm, Baromi Centre. The workshop is free and light refreshments will be provided. RSVP at: www.southgippsland.vic.gov.au/72hrs-workshops for catering purposes.
