An exciting opportunity is now open for a local young student heading to University or TAFE straight from school or after a gap year.
They will be funded to join the Rural Youth Network and its Mentoring and Leadership Programs. This opportunity will enable students in our district to build valuable support networks, develop personal skills and connect with other rural young people who are moving or have moved into University or TAFE from across Victoria.
“Youthrive Victoria’s Rural Youth Network, Leadership and Mentoring programs are designed and run by young people for young people,” explains Ruth Rogan, Executive Officer of the Community Foundation. “They not only offer personal development but provide an opportunity to start tertiary education with a network of rural students doing similar things. This is invaluable given that moving away from home and existing networks is one of the main reasons students drop out.”

A key part of the Youthrive program is attendance at the Young Rural Leaders Camp, which is run by young people who previously attended the camp. It is an informal, immersive five-day experience, which will build confidence and lifelong friendships, strengthen leadership and teamwork skills just before the students start their tertiary studies. The camp is entirely free, includes accommodation, meals and activities, and takes place from January 11th to 15th, 2027.
This life-changing opportunity is funded by the Mirboo North Lions Club, in partnership with the Community Foundation’s Education Support Program.
The Mirboo North Lions already donate funds to both the Mirboo North Primary School and the Mirboo North Secondary College each year in support of local students. This partnership extends their support to students going on to tertiary education.
“The most enduring legacy a community can build is through the education of its young people,” explains Leatha Peters, Vice-President of the Mirboo North Lions. “The skills, confidence and connections gained through this program will stay with our local young people for life.”
