The Mirboo North Community Garden Committee are excited to share the news that the work to construct the first phase of the Community Garden in Baromi Park will be starting next month!
This project has been in the pipeline for some years, but agreement with South Gippsland Shire on the location in Baromi Park, detailed planning by the Committee around the design and implementation, together with grant support means that this popular idea is about to become reality.
The idea of a Community Garden was first raised on the community noticeboard during the COVID pandemic back in 2022, and while there was enthusiastic support, pinning down a location was challenging. In 2023 the group became an incorporated association, with the help of a grant from the Mirboo North Pharmacy Fund.
“Once incorporated, we pressed ahead and agreed on a location for the Community Garden in Baromi Park,” explained Sue Carrigan, Chair. “With the location agreed, we moved into planning and developed the concept design in 2024, thanks to a grant from the Mirboo North Community Recovery Fund. Further detailed planning followed and we were delighted to have funding for implementation confirmed by South Gippsland Shire last month.”
While the motivation to develop a Community Garden has been around for quite a few years, its importance was emphasised after the February ’24 storm as being important in recovery.
The Mirboo North Community Recovery Working Group noted it as a priority under its ‘Healing in our Environment’ pillar.
It will be wonderful to see the Mirboo North Community Garden come to life over the next few months: a place where people can volunteer, create social connections, and join in activities and events, all while gardening and growing vegies using sustainable practices.
