Build skills to support the Teens in your Life

Parents, carers, sporting coaches, youth leaders and anyone who supports teenagers and young people are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to build confidence in recognising and responding to youth mental health challenges.

As part of the Live4Life South Gippsland suicide prevention initiative, a Youth Mental Health First Aid course will be held in Mirboo North across three Tuesday evenings, making it easier for busy working adults to participate. The training is designed specifically for adults who care for or support teenagers, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise the signs of a developing mental health problem, start supportive conversations and help young people access professional support when they need it.

Supporting Young People Starts with Knowledge

Live4Life South Gippsland is a community-wide initiative that raises awareness of youth mental health challenges. A key part of this initiative is training all the year 8 and year 10 students in six secondary colleges across South Gippsland each year. This training helps these young people recognise the signs of mental ill-health, and provides practical ways to understand, respond and support each other.

Traditionally delivered over two full days, this course has been redesigned into three evening sessions to make it more accessible for parents, carers and community members who work full-time. Sessions will be held on Tuesday 18 August, Tuesday 25 August and Tuesday 1 September, from 5.30pm to 9.30pm at the Walter J Tuck Recreation Reserve, Mirboo North. Participants must attend all three sessions to gain accreditation.

To make the evenings as easy as possible, supper and refreshments will be provided at each session.

Accessible Training for Parents, Carers and Community Members

“Young people are facing increasing mental health challenges, and having trusted adults around them who know how to recognise the signs and respond appropriately can make an enormous difference. This training gives people practical skills and greater confidence to support the young people in their lives.”

The three-session course is heavily subsidised through Live4Life South Gippsland, costing participants just $15, which includes course materials, accreditation and supper each evening.

The Mirboo North & District Community Foundation is proud to be one of the partner organisations delivering Live4Life South Gippsland and encouraging local adults to take advantage of this valuable training opportunity.
