Mirboo North Seniors Celebrate Jazz & Big Band Afternoon in Warragul

Last week a Community Bus full of our senior citizens drove down to Warragul’s West Gippsland Arts Centre for an afternoon of jazz and big band music courtesy of the Royal Australian Navy Band.  By all accounts it was a fabulous afternoon with a variety of instrumental music, from classic swing numbers to contemporary compositions, and then an accompanying vocalist.

This cultural outing was supported by the Mirboo North Seniors Fund in recognition that October is Seniors Month.  This Seniors Fund was set up in 2021 when the Mirboo North Senior Citizens group wound up their organisation and donated their remaining funds of more than $45,000 to the Community Foundation.  These funds sit within the perpetual Mirboo North Community Seniors Fund which is ringfenced, as requested by the donors, for supporting the mental and physical health of the senior citizens of Mirboo North.

Mirboo North Community Bus Supports Cultural Outing for Seniors Month

Since 2021 this fund has supported projects and events with more than $8,000 of grants, whilst growing through investment earnings and donations to over $55,000.  In the case of this event, the Seniors Fund covered the cost of the Community Bus and driver, as well as half of the cost of the tickets to the show.

The Community Bus is 12 seater bus owned by the Community Foundation and operated in partnership with the Mirboo North Community Shed.  It is well suited for group outings and can be driven by anyone with a normal driving licence.  The bus itself is almost brand new (funded in 2023 by the Department of Transport and Planning) and is a very comfortable drive or way to travel at a cost of $1 per kilometre (to cover fuel and expenses).

If you want to find out more about the Mirboo North Seniors Funds or the events and projects it supports, drop in to Co-space or call Ruth on 0418 301 092.

Or if you are interested in booking the Community Bus, please contact 0490 057 880.
