Celebrating Seniors Month in Mirboo North

This October there will be a number of events taking place in Mirboo North where the older adults in our community will be able to come together and enjoy some fantastic local food and some social connection.

We are conscious many people are still getting comfortable with reconnecting fully with social activities, particularly where they include larger numbers,” explains Ruth Rogan, Executive Officer of the Mirboo North & District Community Foundation.  “However, it is good to remind ourselves that connections matter.  Strong ties with family, friends and the community provide us with happiness, security, support and a sense of well-being.”

Thanks to a grant from the South Gippsland Shire Council, the Community Foundation is hosting a Seniors Lunch at the Mirboo North Hotel at 12 noon on Wednesday 5th October. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the Mirboo North Hotel and will cover the two course meal and a ticket for a door prize on the day.   Tickets can be purchased in advance and should also be available at the door (though numbers are limited to 70).

The monthly community lunch, hosted (and cooked) by the Friends of the Aged Care, will also take place on the last Monday in October, 24th October, also at noon at the Baromi Centre.  Tickets to this tasty home-cooked lunch will be $20, but the Community Foundation is sponsoring five free tickets as part of Seniors month (contact Mary Baker for more information).  The funds for this sponsorship come from the Community Foundation’s Mirboo North Community Seniors Fund.

As a final celebration for Seniors month, the Mirboo CWA Night Owls will be providing a delicious and free morning tea at 10.30am on Wednesday 26th October in the RSL Hall, Mirboo North.
In 2021 the CWA Night Owls received a grant from the Community Foundation, also funded from the Mirboo North Community Seniors Fund, to run two morning teas to assist with reconnection of the older adults in our community.  The first was a Christmas in July themed morning tea and we look forward to sampling their beautiful baking at this Seniors month inspired event.

Take the opportunity to reconnect with your social network during October at one of these events.  And perhaps encourage a friend you haven’t seen for a while to come with you!
