Grants to support students going to Uni or TAFE

Students of any age who are taking up tertiary level studies in early 2023 can apply to the Mirboo North & District Community Foundation for an Education Support Award to assist with the financial costs of studying.  Applications are made through our website and will open on Monday 12th September and close on 23rd November.

Education Support Award recipients 2022

The Education Support Program was started by the Community Foundation back in 2013, to provide financial support to help students access University, TAFE or other recognised post-secondary courses.

“The financial challenges faced by rural students are significant.  The Education Support Awards are targeted at supporting students in managing some of the upfront costs, like accommodation bonds, books and laptops,” explained Diana Mueller, Chair of Community Engagement and Grants Committee. “In the last 9 years, more than $170,000 has gone to support local students.”

Since 2018 the program has expanded to tackle other challenges facing our students in taking up further studies, for example moving away from support networks or settling into completely new courses and environments.  In collaboration with Youthrive Victoria, we provide some students with access to Youthrive’s mentoring and personal development programs which are aimed at reducing the drop-out rates of unsupported students.  There has been great feedback from the students who have taken up these opportunities.

The Community Bank Mirboo North & District has always been a supporter of the Education Support Program and they are back on board for 2023.

“We are delighted to have the Community Bank Mirboo North & District’s support again in sponsoring two more two-year Education Support Award for students leaving Secondary College and heading to university,” said Ruth Rogan, Executive Officer. “These students will receive financial support of $3,000 in their first and second years of their University Course.”

Community Bank sponsored awards in 2022 went to Sasha Chalmers (left) and Meghan Basarke.

Whether you are leaving school, have been earning money to go to University or have decided to go back as a mature student, this support is available to you.  Have a look at the application form on our website now: www.mirboodistrictoundation.org.au.
